The Value of Puppy Obedience Training Early On

While it’s never too late to train a puppy or a dog, there is value in starting obedience training early on. When puppies are younger, they haven’t yet developed bad behaviors that are difficult to unteach. They may also be quicker to learn new behaviors, and have an easier time retaining learned information. Teaching a young pup is almost always more effective than training an older dog.

In addition to the ease of training, there’s another benefit to starting puppy training early on: your sanity! If you have a new puppy, you may be looking for a fast solution to accidents in the house, puppy mouthiness, chewing, and other hard-to-deal-with behaviors. The earlier that you invest in obedience training, the sooner these behaviors will no longer disrupt your daily life.

Behaviors Your Puppy Will Learn During Obedience Training

During puppy obedience training, your puppy will learn basic commands as well as good manners. Some basic behaviors that you can expect your puppy to learn during training include commands such as:

  • Sit
  • Stay
  • Come
  • Down
  • Leave it
  • Place

In addition to commands, they’ll also learn manners and good behaviors such as:

  • No jumping
  • No barking
  • No counter-surfing
  • Crate training
  • Housetraining
  • No biting/chewing/puppy mouthiness

If there are specific behaviors that you want to correct, please let our trainers know in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Puppy Training

If you are thinking about enrolling your pup in obedience training, you may have a number of questions about the programs and what to expect. Here are some answers to a few frequently asked questions we hear:

  • How long are your programs? Our training programs run for 10 days, four weeks, and eight weeks. For most puppies, the 10-day foundational program is plenty to establish basic good behaviors. If you think that your pup will want to go through a more intensive training program at a later day (such as therapy dog training) or if you want your puppy to develop good behaviors for life, one of the longer training programs may be recommended.
  • What types of breeds do you work with? We specialize in doodle and retriever breeds.
  • What is your training method? We use positive reinforcement to teach good behaviors and commands. We never use shock collars.
