Teaching and Maintaining Commands (BED)

Learn how to teach “BED”, “SIT”, and “DOWN” in a fun & rewarding way, without harsh correction, that aims for your dog’s success, and also that your command will be maintained until you release.

BED: Using a comfy mat or a dog bed, lure your dog onto the bed or mat, using the word

“BED”. When your dog easily comes up onto the bed mat, reward your dog with “YES” and a high value treat. Continue randomly rewarding the dog while he is on the bed. If he tries to step off, using body pressure and your correction word (no, uh-uh, nope) until your dog steps back on the bed, reward him immediately with “YES” and a high valued treat.

Wait for 10 seconds after he settles on the bed and engages with you. Release him with “FREE” and toss a reward out of the bed so that he follows it.

Continue practicing this. As your dog understands that he must stay on the bed until released, make the duration on the bed longer and start proofing with bits of food or toys out of the bed.

This is the foundation of teaching your dog to understand and maintain all basic and static commands until released!

Remember that patience and consistency builds understanding and trust. Take your time and make it fun!
