train an ESA.

Training for Emotional Support Animals

Emotional Support Animals (ESA) are not limited to just dogs, they can be nearly any type of animal. Its sole purpose is to provide comfort by proximity to its person. ESAs have an important job to do but are very different from service dogs. They do NOT have the right to go into public places, however, they DO have the right to live in non-pet housing and fly in-cabin on an airplane with their handler.

What are the Requirements for an Emotional Support Animal?

Legally speaking, Emotional Support Animals do not need to have any specialized training. However, it is highly recommended that they have obedience training. An ESA can be for anyone (children included) and requires a doctor’s note in order to live in non-pet housing or fly in-cabin.

How Do I Know if My Pup is Right for an Emotional Support Animal?

While the training for Therapy Dogs is not as strict as that needed for Service Dogs, it does require pups to have a certain temperament and level of obedience. At Happy Pup Manor, our team will help you select a puppy that best fits your lifestyle to become your ESA. Our relationships with numerous breeders across the midwest and nationally mean we can help you select the right breed for your needs and goals.

Then, at 8 weeks old the puppy will come to us for 4 weeks of obedience training. During this time, the puppy will learn its obedience behaviors, manners (such as no jumping, potty training, and no biting), and will also learn some specialized ESA behaviors such as a cuddle on command, a hug, or pressure therapy. After training, we will bring your puppy back to you, and have a lesson with you to show you how to use its obedience and special training, as well as how to maintain our training and care for your puppy. At that time, we will answer any questions you may have.
